Orchestra - Barbara Bush Middle

The Barbara Bush Middle School Orchestra has a long history of high achievement. It sets the standard for superior performance on a yearly basis. Students involved in the orchestra learn skills such as cooperation, critical thinking, teamwork, self-direction, time management, organization, and an appreciation for artistry and beauty, all while participating in the flagship organization on campus.

Pathways

Beginning Orchestra

The Beginner Orchestra consists of students who have had no previous experience playing the string instruments of the orchestra: Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass. These students consist mainly of sixth graders, however, there are some exceptions. Throughout the year, the students will be introduced to proper instrument position and posture, note and rhythm reading, and left and right-hand playing technique. As the students’ progress, students perform at concerts and festivals throughout the year.

Concert Orchestra

The Concert Orchestra is the Sub-Non Varsity orchestra comprised of 7th and 8th graders with at least one year of prior experience. Students in this orchestra continue refining the techniques and skills learning in Beginner Orchestra as they learn new music. Using these techniques and skills, the students perform at concerts, competitions, and festivals throughout the year.

Philharmonic Orchestra

The Philharmonic Orchestra is the Non-Varsity Orchestra that is comprised of 7th and 8th graders. As a performing orchestra, this orchestra will present various concerts throughout the year as well as participate in festivals and compete at the annual UIL Concert and Sight-Reading competition.

Symphonic Orchestra

The Symphonic Orchestra is the Varsity Orchestra that is comprised of 7th and 8th graders. Being the Varsity group, this orchestra will be involved in concerts, festivals, and various performances within school and also throughout the community. They also compete at the annual UIL Concert and Sight-Reading competition. Students are required to attend sectionals before or after school for their particular instrument to work on specific sections of the music. Membership in this orchestra requires a high level of commitment.
