Cross-Continental Collaboration: BBMS Band Gets Advice from Competition Piece Composer

Barbara Bush Middle School Band students recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as they virtually connected with composer Wes Stephens, the writer of their UIL competition piece, March of the Barbarians. Stephens, who is currently living in Iceland, joined our Broncos online to listen to their performance and provide real-time feedback as they prepare for competition. The unique cross-continental connection made the rehearsal experience even more memorable for students and directors alike.

March of the Barbarians is a dynamic concert band work that musically depicts an invading army through powerful dissonance and aleatoric techniques, challenging students to think critically about tone, balance, and musical storytelling. After hearing the band perform, Stephens offered insight into his compositional intent, shared rehearsal tips, and encouraged students as they fine-tuned their performance. A special thank you to our incredible band directors, Mrs. Macias and Mr. Cortier, for creating this extraordinary learning opportunity. Their commitment to excellence continues to provide our Broncos with meaningful, real-world experiences that elevate both their musicianship and their confidence.
